Initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emission include 50% reduction in road transportation of raw material and finished products; commissioning of 12.5 MW waste heat from kiln operation and use of alternate fuels. Life-cycle assessment study has been carried out for OPC and PPC. Customer's satisfaction surveys are conducted regularly. Internal control systems and procedures and their outcomes have been verified and validated by independent agencies. Larsen and Toubro Limited (L&T) is a major engineering, construction, service conglomerate with global operations. L&T participates in national and international assessments like DJSI (Dow Jones Sustainability Indices), CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project), ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) rating/assessments to benchmark triple-bottom-line performances. L&T has developed green portfolio through use of renewable energy, energy efficiency, GHG emission reduction and conservation of water. Execution risk reviews are regularly conducted for the projects. 16.8 million units of electricity is supplied through use of wind energy.

Fluidised bed combustion technology, super critical power generation technology and use of renewable energy has positively impacted environmental sustainability. Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) is a Navratna Public Sector unit involved in refining and marketing of petroleum products. HPCL is a part of comprehensive study on climate risk preparedness. Around 2000 Cubic Metres of oil sludge was bio-remediated through a treatment adopting bio-remediation using natural occurring bacteria for oil degradation thereby converting the low oily silt into a fertile soil. Emphasis is placed on conducting business affairs within a defined set of network according to policies, internal & external in a 'transparent manner'.

Vedanta Limited, Cairn Oil & Gas Vertical is engaged in exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas. The measures undertaken for GHG reduction include zero flaring of gas, replacement of diesel burner with dual fuel burner, installation of solar lights and use of energy efficient CFL and LED lights, resulting in energy saving of about 49,000 GJ and related GHG savings of about 3,000 tonnes of CO equivalent. Percentage of water recycled and reused increased in 2016- 2 17 to 82.59% against 66.33% in 2015-16. Reliance Industries Limited, Dahej Manufacturing Division has state-of-the-art clean technology and manufacturing facilities for production of petrochemical materials like PVC, HDPE, Caustic Soda, PTA and PET. Board has a dedicated committee to look into areas of sustainability. The initiatives for water conservation has led to 6.5 mgd water recovery from RO Plant. Specific thermal energy consumption reduced from 8082 KJ/Kg in 2015-16 to 7741 KJ/Kg in 2016-17 i.e. by 4.3%. It also generated 6,989 MWh of electricity from wind energy in 2016-17.

NTPC Limited is the largest public sector power utility in India with an installed capacity of 51,635 MW. NTPC has a dedicated research and development wing with focus on mitigating climate change impacts. Ozone depleting substance emissions reduced by 55% in 2016-17 against base year of 2011. Total water consumption and per unit withdrawal have been lower by about 3% during the year. Energy efficiency initiative such as setting up of coal fired units with ultra super critical parameters; and establishment of Indian Coal based gasifier and gas cleaning system for Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle are networthy. Six of its renewable energy projects have been registered for UNFCCC CDM programme of activities. Bharti Airtel Limited is a global leading provider of telecommunication services and solutions for mobile, fixed line and broadband sub-sectors. Airtel adheres to emission norms prescribed by International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection, which is ten times stricter for India compared to other technologically advanced countries. 35% reduction in primary energy per capita consumption has been achieved through diesel use reduction and use of renewable energy. Correspondingly 28.7% reduction in carbon dioxide emission has been achieved.

Arvind Limited is one of the oldest textile company engaged in textile and apparel business. 75% of total raw material comes from renewable resources which is cotton. 11% of raw materials are recycled material such as recycled polyester yarn, cotton yarn and plastic for packaging. Direct energy consumption by primary sources and per capita consumption for main product has reduced gradually by 8% per year for last three years. 75% of water is recycled and used. Use of surface miner for excavation of coal avoids blasting and creates stable and clean bench surfaces. Aditya Birla Fashion & Retail Limited (ABFRL) is a leading apparels company working with a focus on sustainability. Product stewardship policy has been made. Lifecycle assessment of cotton shirts and denim trousers has been undertaken to assess environmental impact at all stages. Use of azo dye and phalates are stopped as they are found hazardous to health. ABFRL uses 92% non-pollutant packaging across its facilities. 6.4% reduction in non-hazardous waste in FY 17 against FY 16 is observed.

Energy consumption of main products has reduced by 11% in 2015-16 compared to the previous years; 12% decrease has been achieved in water consumption while 70% water was recycled. Green House Gas intensity has shown a declining trend of 32% in 2015 against 2006. Direct emission is reduced to about 809 MTeq CO2 as against 1484 MTeq CO2 in the previous year in its power systems division at Hosur.

With a score of 98 the Bank was second highest among all financial institutions on CDP index in 2015. YES Bank finances green infrastructure projects in renewable energy and energy efficiency and has launched the initiative, called “Scaling up Sustainable Development of MSME Clusters in India” supporting green eco-system for MSME growth. The Bank has launched a Community Engagement Platform titled YES COMMUNITY to create awareness on socially and environmentally pertinent issues. State Bank of India is publically owned largest Bank in terms of deposits, advances, profits, branches, number of customers and employees. Organisational sustainability has been focused through NPA reductions. Their Green Channel Counter has 7.4 lakh transactions per day and more than 3.91 crore transactions were routed through “Green Remit Cards” with substantial saving in paper. Extensive use of Internet Banking by 2.55 crore users has reduced carbon footprint considerably. It has extensive use of renewable energy based system and 1150 ATMs are on solar power back-up reportedly saving 2000 Tons of CO equivalent per year. Bank has a strict policy for disposal of e-waste in environment friendly manner.

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, is a Government of India Enterprise with a Navratna Status. The refinery has undertaken major energy conservation measures resulting in a saving of 19,170 SRFT (Standard Refinery Fuel Tonnage) per year. Total GHG emissions reduction during the year was 60,960 MT CO equivalent. 18.2% of water was recycled and reused in the refinery. Vapour Recovery Systems were installed at all outlets, 2 selling more than 300 KL Petrol per month in Delhi. Solar PV systems have been installed at additional 575 retail outlets and 495 outlets were provided with LED lights. Asian Paints Limited is a public limited company, well known for different varieties of paints. The organisation has Environmental Management System in place and has a target of 50% reduction in non-product fresh water consumption in three years from the baseline of 2013-14. The company has set up a renewable energy agenda 'RE36' with a target to achieve 36% of its electricity consumption (at decorative paint plants) from renewable energy sources by 2020. It has attained 9% reduction in specific power consumption in 2015-16. During the last two financial years effluent reduction of 53.6% was achieved. Direct and Indirect GHG Emissions have reduced by 10.17% in 2015-16. Sustainability report records high level of Sustainability efforts.

Reliance Industries Limited, Nagothane Manufacturing Division is a petrochemical site located in the Raigarh district of Maharashtra. Through process technology and operational control measures it has launched a programme to minimize the generation of product or process wastes. The plant uses poly-propylene material to make bags for packing its polymer products. These bags can be recycled to make poly-propylene which in turn can be used as raw material for making plastic products. Low sulphur heavy stock which was earlier treated as waste is now being reused as Liquid Fuel in captive power plant. Specific energy consumption has reduced by about 10%. Specific hazardous waste generated in kilogram per MT of product has decreased by over 10%. Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Limited is an integrated global pharmaceutical company, committed to providing affordable and innovative medicines for healthier living. The energy consumption is reduced by over 10% and water consumption has also been reduced by about 7%. Total water recycled and re-used during 2015-16 was 848367 KL (67%). Sustainability principles are incorporated into core business processes at two levels: at the corporate level, where overall policies and strategic directions are set and capital is allocated; and the business group level, where revenue is generated and where the impact on communities and the environment is most immediate.

Bharti Infratel Limited is one of world's largest telecom tower infrastructure providers with pan India operations. They have been taking initiatives for controlling GHG emissions by employing renewable energy sources; abandoning air-conditioners, improving energy efficiency, and increasing energy storage. They have 3070 solar sites at the end of March 2016. Power and fuel consumption per tower has shown a decline of 1.8% over the previous year. 28% reduction has been achieved in diesel consumption since financial year 2011 despite increase in towers (17% growth) and colocations (42% growth). New innovative solutions have been implemented, such as solar panels on tower legs. Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited is a public sector unit constituted under Ministry of Railways. The company is permitting only energy efficient equipment and machineries at construction sites together with their regular maintenance regime. It reduces wastage of water by use of efficient fixtures in toilets and washroom, keeping record of water supplied to site for domestic consumption, regular maintenance and repairing water pipe lines etc. Some of the interventions and advanced technological options which could reduce GHG emissions are: Communication Based Train Control (CBTC); Driver Advice System; Regenerative Braking; Aerodynamic Profiling in Rolling Stock and On-board Lubrication System.

Green House Gas Emissions at Naroda reduced by 6% for direct emission and 17% for indirect emission. Arvind Group established a focused vertical viz. Arvind Agribusiness, which is currently working with over 9000 cotton farmers and advising and hand-holding them to enhance their farm productivity while reducing their financial risks. Knowledge Integration Services (KIS) is a private limited company providing sustainable technologies for water, waste water and biogas. They have offices in India and in six other countries. Their main services and products are sustainable clean technologies for Biogas, Effluent Treatment Plants, Sewage Treatment Plants, Water Treatment Plants and Biomass projects. Their Zero Pond, Zero Pollution and Higher Biogas (ZPZH) technology provides a sustainable solution for the industrial effluent treatment sector. KIS has installed about 30 MW of renewable energy. They have Energy Policy, Water Management Policy and Waste Management Policy. They have reduced 11,50,085 tons eq of CO emissions per year 2 through their technologies.
