In the present work the in-house generated plastics were shredded to 5mm size and pneumatically injected into the EAF slag as a replacement of coke fines. The slag is subsequently used as construction aggregate. This method of recycling plastics has huge potential to get consumed in large steel making furnaces. The use of plastics has reduced the coke consumption and shown improvements in slag foaming and furnace efficiency.

The innovative product is “Candidate fuel equivalent to JP-7 specification (Indigenous production of Missile Fuel and import substitution for JP-7 fuel)” which was commercialized in the year 2021. Defence Research Laboratory (DRL) of Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO) is currently developing Hypersonic Cruise Missile (HCM) powered by a regenerative cooled Scramjet Engine. As per the preliminary design, fuel with JP-7 specification is found to be the right fuel to meet the engine requirements. The innovation addressed the issue of import dependency on JP-7 fuel by manufacturing the same indigenously. CPCL has successfully demonstrated the capability of production of JP-7 Equivalent fuel by a unique technique of producing the fuel directly from a single-step process, by fine-tuning a narrow cut refinery stream with necessary adjustments in the physical parameters of the processing unit for required aromatic saturation.

These polymers follow the natural nutrient cycle. In nutrient cycle, the polymer is eventually converted into carbon dioxide, water and biomass without leaving any traces of heavy metal or other toxic substances. Therefore, these polymers do not generate any kind of micro-plastic. The developed biodegradable mulch films have application in agriculture sector to replace the conventional mulch film made from polyolefins.

The innovative product “‘HP CoSoL’ – Selective solvent for lube oil yield improvement, Liquid-Liquid Extraction” is the most common process for extraction of aromatics from lube oil distillates to increase the Viscosity Index. In this work, novel and cost-effective HP CoSol process developed at R&D Centre was used to maximize the lube raffinate yields from existing refinery solvent extraction units (SEUs) using a mixture of compatible and cheaper solvents without affecting quality. HP CoSol System resulted in lube raffinate yield improvement compared to base solvent.

The general perception has been that regeneration of energy is possible with AC motor driven locomotive and EMU systems and it is not possible with DC motor driven loco and EMUs. BHEL therefore developed 2MW Water Cooled IGBT based Regenerative Braking System for WAG-7 loco. Regenerative system was designed in a manner to keep motoring unchanged and braking system fully isolated during motoring and automated on braking. System is estimated to generate approximately 15% of consumed energy. An estimate on amount of energy which is normally wasted was Rs. 40 lakh per annum per loco.

HPCL has designed, fabricated and installed efficient and cost-effective FCC Feed Injection Nozzles, commercially called Spray Max, in both its refineries at Mumbai and Visakhapatnam. SprayMax nozzles are designed to provide multi-stage atomization of the FCC Feed with efficient utilization of steam. These nozzles were developed at one-tenth of the cost of commercially available nozzles. The product was introduced in 2016 and has been patented.

The innovation HP-HIGAS Technology, based on process intensification, is a first of its kind cutting-edge technology in refining industry with substantial applicability in gas treatment processes. The innovation has the capability to substantially reduce the size of conventional absorption separation columns up to ten times, while achieving the same processing capacity and performance. The first ever commercial HP-HIGAS unit with 2.5 meters height has been successfully implemented in 2014 15 for H2S removal from flue gas in the Visakh Refinery of HPCL. This unit has replaced an existing 23 meters conventional absorption column, resulting in a significant size reduction of ten times. The product has been patented.

CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad was established for creating an outstanding knowledge base in chemistry and chemical technology. The innovative product is manufacture of Hydrazine Hydrate. The Institute attained a breakthrough by developing indigenously the technology in close association with Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Limited. The technology comes in purview of a Make-in-India and Sashakt Bharat Initiative. The production process has been patented in India. The process developed via the Peroxide – Ketazine route is novel. As Ketazine avoids decomposition of Hydrazine; the yields are high with less consumption of ammonia. It has been demonstrated that more than 90% of the recoveries of catalysts and solvents are recycled back into the process, thus making the process commercially viable. Hydrazine Hydrate technology is developed for the first time in India.
